Maj. Terry Joyce was raised in Indianapolis
and graduated from Indiana University. He entered the Air
Force in 1960 through the ROTC program and landed at Edwards
Air Force Base, Calif., for his first assignment. The X-15
was the big item at Edwards then and Terry escorted the
media around because he was in public affairs. He and his
wife, Peg Dunn, were married while he was at Edwards.
Terry’s next assignment was navigator training at
Waco, Texas, followed by nearly seven years in EC-121s at
McClellan Air Force Base, in Sacramento, Calif. He got lots
of Southeast Asia time and a Distinguished Flying Cross
while in EC-121s.
From California, the Joyces headed back to Indiana and an
ROTC instructor’s job for four years. By this time,
they had a son and a daughter. Then, it was on to Charleston,
followed by two years in the Philippines and back again
to Charleston. Terry retired from the Air Force in 1982
and joined The Post and Courier, the daily newspaper in
Charleston. He was the paper’s military reporter for
17 years.
He retired from the paper on Jan. 1, 2005. He and Peg still
live in Summerville. Their daughter has three children and
lives in Louisville, Ky. Their son and his wife live in
Spartanburg, S.C., and have two children.
